My mother Florence Bannerman often tells me about her contribution during the second " World War".
She lived in Blackley, North Manchester then and a lot of women were based at AVROS (A.V.Roes) during the war they were building parts of the Lancaster Bomber. There were also some men -Engineers -based there, and built eighty items per week. It was either the wings or the body which was built, then transferred in parts to Woodford near Chester where they were put together.
She was based in the control office keeping a record of parts required, and position of each construction, a post she enjoyed.
She also told me on a time when the Germans were bombing the area, and a German plane flew over so low she could see the pilot's face, and the jesticulations he was making to her and others. She says she will never forget it. Avros was not hit by the bombers, but as it is now owned by British Aerospace, most of the plant has been closed, and the positions moved to either Woodford,or the place near Preston. Some of my school mates moved there to become engineers in 1964 when we finished, and Colin Prince who was the recruitment manager at Crown Wallpapers in Blackley went there when the Wallpaper factory shut, in the early 1970's.
It is amazing how areas that provided good services when they were required, are not taken into account at this time.
Those where the days.
J.G.Bannerman.
Son of Mrs.Florence Bannerman,AVROs Lancaster Bombers.when my father was with the Navy HMS Dorsetshire.
