I remember the day war was declared as though it was yesterday. September 3rd 1939 was an exceptionally fine day. I had just come to Bradford to start a new job as a home economist and knew no-one. Fortunately someone living in the same building as myself invited me in to listen to the 11am news with her. We heard the dreaded words from Mr Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, "We are at war with Germany". We are alone, was my reaction, full of fear as I knew we could expect no mercy from Hitler and the German forces.
As the day went on voices came from around the Empire (as it was before the days of the Commonwealth). From Canada, from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and so many other places. I then, like everyone, realised we were NOT along; we had stalwart friends.
