I remember the days when I was about 11 or 12, 1941 - 1942 ... I could stand outside my house in Letchworth in Hertfordshire and we could see London burning after it had been hit by bombs.

And even in our area, Letchworth and Henlow and Bedford, where the incendiary bombs dropped, it was horrific ...

By 1944, my dad had died, with war wounds, and we moved to Macclesfield in Cheshire. It was a lot safer in that part of the world.

But what I saw will stay in my memory forever.
