This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by Carl Mitchell

I lived in Compton Street L5, we were in the air raid shelter during a air raid and when the family came out their house it had been bombed. We went to stay with my grandmother and then evacuated to Cwm Pamacro, which is in Wales. Mean while my Dad was with the DEM’s which was the like the army and it stood for defensively equipped merchant ships, he came home after being away for 9 months from his ship in Southampton and he jumped on a train home to Liverpool. When he got home he found that the house had been bombed an he didn’t know were we were. He went to my Grandmothers and she told him that we had been evacuated to Betsey Codes and he had a ten mile walk to find were we were and he kept getting stopped by the Welsh home guard cause he was in uniform. He eventually found us around 2 in the morning.
