It was obvious that the war in Gemany would soon be over but the tension amongst us in 18 Platoon, D Company of the 1st Royal Norfolks Battalion was greater than in all the previous attacks we had made, especially as this was the big one.
To our dismay we were to attack the city of Bremen.
Not that any of us knew much about the place other than that it was a large naval port that had been heavily bombed in the earlier stages of the war.
So, in our usual battle formation on one section first, followed on the other side by the small platoon headquartes section in which I was the N0 2 on the mortar and carried some 8 mortar bombs slung around my neck - in addition to the rifle, bayonet,Mauser automatic pistol, cluster of hand grenades and with a 75a anti-tank mine on my back webbing.
Then came the other two sections.
As we slowly crept along we casme into sight of masses of building rubble piled some 20feet high on each side of the road, this obviously created by the bombing and then, to the left, we saw a single buldibg still standing so we swung towards it and crept ever slower to TO BE CONTINUED
