I was 12 years at the time of war starting. By the end of the war, I was a teenager and I remember going dancing on VJ day at the Harper Hay Baths - it was the first time I went to a pub, a really exciting experience. We had to double up with women as there were'nt enough men. We had to use pipe cleaners for hair curlers - we had to make do with what we had. We painted our legs, there were no stockings. I remember going dancing at the Ritz in Manchester. Jimmy Saville was the manager of the Plaza during the war, he dyed his hair tartan, he was a bit crazy! During the war, I was evacuated to Cheadle, which wasn't very far away. I was in Cheadle Church when peace was declared.
