Ron was an army dispatch rider and was keen to get involved where the enemy action was. His fate was to be sent to Northern Ireland because the army considered that there was a possible risk of spying and terrorist activities from Southern Ireland.
One day he was riding his motor cycle along a country road close to the verge when a lorry driven by an Irishman came round a road bend approaching him on the wrong side of the road and collided with him, knocking him off his bike. His injuries were so bad that he was rushed to the nearest hospital and remained out of action for a year.
Ron has never forgotten the arrival of the lorry driven at the hospital the following day with a bottle of Jamieson鈥檚 whisky for him. He admitted liability for the accident and told Ron that he always came round that corner on the wrong side of the road to make it easier for him to drive the lorry off the road and enter a gateway without having to reverse the vehicle in because it was a lot easier.
So much for the dangers of being killed in action. But what about the dangers from the local inhabitants driving on the road in a friendly country??
It took Ron a long time before he was considered by the army to be fit for action and rejoin his regiment.
