In Birmingham we had a mattress in our front room for protection. The planes flew over our house to bomb Coventry. The walls of our house used to bow in when Birmingham was bombed. Afterwards we saw Molotov cocktails hanging in the trees and some landmines.
In Beeston you could see the fires burning in Birmingham. I used to travel to Birmingham every week-end. There were bombs dropped on Woolaton Road in Beeston, trying to get Chilwell Barracks.
