I was 4 years old in 1941. My father was a caretaker of a school off Limestone Road. Due to heavy bombing, we went into the Boiler room (of the school). I was very scared. My mum said we'd bettter leave this place because she thought it'd cave in. So we went towards the air raid shelters on Limestone Road. Buildings were on fire. As we went into the shelter I saw people lying on the ground all in evening dress. I thought they were sleeping but they were dead. We kept carrying along the street to other shelters but they were all destroyed.
We were eventually evacuated on carts.
