I joined the WRNS in 1943 some time after my brother was sunk in a ship about the area of the Bermuda Triangle. I thought it was only fair to wait a period of time after his tragic death before telling my parents that I was going to join the WRNS.
I carried out my fortnight initial training at Leeds, where I gained a proficiency in scrubbing floors. My first WRNS posting was to Invergordon located on the north shore of Cromarty Firth on the East coast of Scotland. Whilst there I was working on the end of a pier, answering a telephone. It was tremendously interesting work, we got to know the various ships which passed through our port. At that time the crews were practising for the landing of troops in Europe. We had vast numbers of troops boarding the ships at Invergordon, then they would leave port and go out of sight, we could hear them practise firing and two days later they would return to port again. This was part of the preparation for the mass troop landing in Europe.
