My husband joined up at the start of the war and served as a Captain in the Army Dental Corp. He was posted to a hospital ship and sometime during the 1940鈥檚 was engaged in picking up wounded from Tobruk and ferrying them to hospital at Alexandria. During this time his ship was torpedoed. He and the ship鈥檚 doctor always played table tennis at 3:00pm each afternoon on the very spot where the ship was struck. Fortunately that day he had had too much to drink and was sleeping it off on his bunk. Otherwise he and the doctor would most certainly have been killed. The ship managed to limp back to port.
