The purpose of this entry is to record the bravery of my second cousin, Eddie Charlton, towards the end of WW2.
I have carried the memory of my father taking me to meet Eddie at my Grandmothers house when he came to visit his Winlaton relatives prior to rejoining his Battalion to return to Germany.
I was five years old at the time and Eddie was killed shortly after that meeting.
Some time after Eddie's death his mother and father came to stay with my parents. I think it was the account of Aunt Edith's premonition that, on the night before he was mortally wounded she awoke and could not move her arms. This had a profound affect on my young mind.
It was not until recent years via the internet that I discovered that Eddie was the last European VC of WW2.
