Royal Tank regiment 1936 - 1948
Served in 11th Royal tank Regiment
Formed Jan 1st 1941
Disbanded 1946
Regiment formed at Welbeck Abbey, Notts
Transfered to Lowther Castle, Cumberland
Training took place there with Canal Defence Light (C.D.L)
Only tank regiment to remove their own tank turrets in the field, replacing them with another type.
Sent to the Middle East 1942, training with C.D.L., in the Sinai desert.
Returned to the U.K. 1944
Sent to France late June 1944 after D-Day
C.D.L tanks given up - Amphibious Buffaloes taken over.
Crews retrained in wind, tides etc.
Most canals and Rivers in Holland were crossed.
Arnhem was relieved.
We were involved in actions at the Rivers Rhine, Elbe and the Shelt Estuary as well as the island of Walcheren captured from the North Sea.
At the end of he war the regiment spread through various small townships and members were used to patrol the border between the Russian and British sectors, for several months.
As troops reached their demob and returned to the U.K. the regiment slowly dissolved.
