Soon after I started school in November 1944 the school received a parcel from somewhere in USA. Much more interesting than the food parcels we had heard about because it was full of sweets! Our class, the lowest of the low being the youngest, was given a bag of boiled sweets as our share. We lined up at playtime and were allowed to choose one at a time in turn. The sum total of my share was five boiled sweets of various colours. By the time that the shareout had taken place playtime was over but we were given permission to eat ONE of them. The only time I was ever told I could eat in class. My goodness how we made it last!
