I was a teenager at a girls' grammar school during WW2.
At the outset of the war we went to school part-time but the animal-lovers among us trudged the 2 miles to school every day to mix up the pigswill in the lab. for the pigs that the school housed as their contribution to the war effort. A very memorable smell.
Our heroes were the pilots of the day. We all had pictures of the likes of Paddy Finucane and John Nettleton VC pinned up on the inside flap of our desks. We were careful not to let the teachers see.
The equivalent of A levels were often interrupted by silent visits to the air-raid shelters. However we took it all in our stride as we did sweet, food and clothes rationing.
We were an uncomplaining and tough lot and we learned a great deal about appreciating the simple things in life.
