When I was a child we lived in a house one of three which belonged to Silvan Hall Estate. The Hall was taken over by the army and they had regular foot patrols in the grounds. As our garden backed onto the grounds, we used to make mud balls and laid in wait for the foot soldiers, we then threw the mud balls aiming for their feet. Eventually we were summonsed by a Seargent Major, he was very tall with his cap pulled down hiding his eyes, I remember he had a swagger stick. We were told that if we persisted in throwing mud balls we would be sent to the Tower of London until the end of the war. Needless to say we took heed of this threat!
Black 'Mammy' dolls were popular during the war I decided I would like a black sister so I covered my sisters face and hands with black zebra grate polish, she ended up khaki coloured . The only method of cleaning her skin was to use butter which of course was rationed, I was severely punished.
