My father, John William Griffin, was in the 8th Army during the 2nd World War. This.as you know was under the Command of Montgomery.
This relates to one patrol which took place in Italy.
On being out and about for some time and evening was approaching fast, my father, Sargeant Griffin and his men came to a village and deceided to take cover and bed down for the night. Imagine, when accustomed to the light, the realised that they were in the company of a huge wine vat.
The men, asked if they could have a drinking session, to which my father replied 'yes'. A couple of bullet holes allowed access to the wine. A good night was had by all.
The next morning, one of his men was sent up top to survey the situation. Shock-horror. On looking down into the vat, he informed ny father that there was a body of a lady at the bottom. No time to be scweemish now.
They do say wine matures with a 'bit of body in it'.
My mother and my husband thought that this was a tale unitl some years later another person who was with my father told them the very same tale.
My father went on to the invasion of Dunkirk and today I have his medal and memorabilia.
