I remember the cenotaph at the top of Lichfield St having 4 big search lights and an underground shelter for the whole street on the right. I remember seeing the married women walking off with the American soldiers and going into various pubs. I knew what was going on but nothing was said. We used to ask them "Have you got any gum ,chum"
They had lots of money and spent it on others,they were very generous.
My father was in the army and he was a motorbike messenger between the lines.
Grandad had a Fish and chip shop and looked after me when my mother was upset.We had ration coupons but we didn't go short of much,I was an only child .
grnadad bought me some red clogs which were very sore to wear without socks-I lost one on purpose.
