I have a theory that there is a bomb in our village pond.
There should have been four bombs in the 'stick' that fell on Burgh Heath in Surrey during the blitz. Three of the bombs were found and dug up, unexploded. If there were a fourth bomb, it's logical that based on the positioning of the three that were found, the fourth would have landed in the village pond.
Can you imagine the situation? There is an air raid at full blast and the population is down in the shelter. Even if anyone was out and watching, they would have heard the bombs whistling down and would have got their heads down quickly. Three bombs would have landed with a thump and the one in the pond would have made a splash. In a very short time the water would have settled and become calm. By morning, the mud would have settled and there would be no sign of a bomb at all. Remember, none of the bombs exploded, so if my idea is sound, there could be an unexploded ww2 bomb in Burgh Heath pond.
In order to ease my conscience I have written to the authorities and while they agree with all I say, having checked the records they feel that it would be too expensive to drain the pond and have a look.
In support of my theory, when the pond dried out in 1976, people were there with metal detectors, and I remember someone saying that there was something very big down there. But then the rains came again, and nothing more was done.
I would be very interested to discuss this theory further.
