I am writing about my father who passed away in 1988. He was a Rear Admiral called Geordie Leslie.
On December 11th 1944 he was aged 24, and in command of HMS Cassandra when it was torpedoed near Russia, her bows were shattered, and my father had the job of bringing the Cassandra to safety.
He succeeded in doing that, and was awarded an OBE.
a few of the sailors from the ship are still alive today. Apparently my father's decision not to abbandon ship was crucial.
There is a memorial celebration and service for the 60th anniversary of this event on 11th december this year. It happened about 6 months after D-day.
I am proud of what my father did.
