I was a schoolboy during the war at Queens Park, Bedford. Whilst walking to school I saw one plane seeming to be coming out of a dive, with black bits coming out. I didn't think any more about it until I got to school. It was a quater of an hour after the bombs fell that the siren went! Because I didn't know that it was a German plane I wasn't even frightened.
The bombs demolished Steele's sweet shop, next to the Royal County theatre.
I also remember the evacuees being trailed around looking for homes to take them in. There were just four left when, by the evening, my mate's mother took them in for the night so that they didn't have to wander around any more.
