I was living in London during 1944/45.
The Germans had stepped up the V-1 and V-2 attacks in the hope of disrupting the allied invasion of France. Our flat on Drury Lane was destroyed by a buzz bomb. It was pretty disheartening for the civilian population. There was no defense against these terror weapons and we were sitting ducks. Then one day the windows of the Northamton Poly on St John St. Islington where I was a lab assistant started to shake.
We ran outside to find the skies filled with formations of allied airplanes. I can only surmise that all the sorties that flew over France and the Lowlands that day were routed over London as a morale booster. Flying Fortresses, twin engine fighter bombers and fighters flew over enmasse in what must have been the greatest display of airpower the world has ever known. It continued most of th day. And yet, I have never seen or heard of this event mentioned in any of the post war histories of WW2. Was I dreaming? Did it happen?
Perhaps one of your readers can help. I would like to thank whoever authorized the display of naked power and the Allied airmen that took part in it. God Bless.
Thank you.
