Staffordshire County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.

For leisure, during war-time, we used to go to the cinema once a week. At weekends, we all went to the local pub. The atmosphere was magic. Our local pub, like many more, had a piano. The highlights were the sing-songs (i.e. roll out the barrel) and individuals would get up and sing. However, closing time for all pubs was 10pm.
I shall never go through another period in my life when the people were so friendly and looked out for one another.
