At the time I lived at Keynsham and commuted by train to Bristol as I attended Redcliffe Hill Senior School. On the Monday after the raid, as usual I went to school. The entrance to the playground was actually on the hill. When I walked through the doorway a huge bomb crater confronted me. The gymnasium roof was gone, and every window shattered into the art centre. Anyway we went into assembly and the headmaster Mr Cecil Fryer told us that as the place was rather a mess with shattered glass all over, therefore school was abandoned. He advised all the pupils who came from wherever to look for schooling nearer home. I finished my last one and a half years of Broadlands School Keynsham.

My friend Arthur Buckley formerly of Burley Grove Downend, served as a regular soldier firstly in the 1923-26 Afghanistan campaign, then finally in the North Africa campaign. At one time he went on a patrol and was captured by a German motorised column. As they were being marched back to the German lines one of our planes stopped the column. Every one dived into a Wadi. When the plane had gone the bigger portion of the new P.O.W鈥檚 went out the other end and so into captivity. Arthur and his mate walked out after walking far ahead for three hours they were picked up by a South African armoured patrol. They had been P.O.W鈥檚 for an hour and an half. Arthur passed away at nearly 93
To his honour,
David Banfield
