I would be 12 or 13 years old, and on Saturday mornings I went to "Salmons" Cake Shop, King Street, Ulverstan.

I had to queue up for any chance of a cake or two or any sweet thing at all, but we always came home with a few cakes.

My father Arnold had an allotment near home where he used to "dig for Britain". He would grow whatever he could to eat.

He would sometimes kill the odd pig and I can remember half a side of pork hanging in the front room!

It was not very nice.
