In !940 I was home on a few day' leave.
On the second night the Germans started their blitz on the London docks which were just over a mile away.
So we beat a hasty retreat to the Anderson shelter in the back yard.
The ground shook while the bombs fell around us, and we felt helpless, frightened, and angry- we knew we could not let them win.
We looked out at dawn after a sleepless night and saw that everything was white and thought it had been snowing.
Then, as it became lighter, we realised thay were not snow-flakes; but white feathers.
Somebody's feather bed had taken a direct hlt- I hope he was not in it.
