I was a schoolgirl living at Dagnal during the war and I remember the tanks coming through the village after the end of the war between 1945 and 1948. It was summertime, and there were hundreds of soldiers and tanks coming through the village.
My brother Trevor was only weeks old, and he was in his pram in the front garden when I saw a tank with its gun pointing straight at him. I remember picking him up, blankets and all and taking him in to Mum. I thought he was in danger. There wasn’t much traffic going through the village before that, you see. Hardly any cars. But for weeks we were excited to see these tanks and lorries driving through the village. It was so noisy.
There were a lot of small aeroplanes in the fields at the back.
