One night( when Hammonds was bombed) my Dad brought me out of the shelter to see the sky which was red all over due to the fires in the city centre.
When we had the Peace Parties some one in the street brought out a piano for dancing and singing. There were races up and down and we had a bonfire in the middle of the road, as did many areas so there were large craters in the roads as the bonfires had cracked the concrete.
At this time I was living in Brooklands Road near Ideal Boilers and Radiators.
We had a Victory Parade into the town, I think it was all the schoolchildren. I went as a 'Victory Fairy' with a ballet dress on with a big 'V' in red, white and blue on the bodice.
One of the celebrations took place in Queen's Gardens and they set the fountains going, people were jumping in!
Although sweets were rationed we didn't feel at all deprived as that was just how life was, we weren't ever hungry.
One of the nights during an air raid we went into a neighbour's house and sat under her table which was a shelter. We usually had neighbours in our shelter with us, for company I suppose. I think it must have been social occasions.
Apparently during the Blitz the sirens went off every night, so much so that I was just put in there at bedtime with Mam and Dad, they didn't bother going to bed.
