The barren landscape and freezing temperatures we could cope with, but later we learnt that a submarine ahead of us had sunk one of our destroyer escorts. The return trip to Scapa Flow was depressing. On arrival there we heard of Germany's unconditional surrender, and this was greeted with mixed feelings. There was almost stunned silence as we realized our next task would bring us into contact with the dreaded Kamikaze pilots off Japan. We learnt later that several of our aircraft carriers had already been involved. it was with great relief we learned that Japan had also surrendered unconditionally, albeit at the mercy of the "Atomic Bomb." We noe know that Japan was also faced with the full might of the USSR - that nust have been the last straw.
