When I was 14 yers and ready to leave school I'd hoped to work on an office. Mother said "who do you think you are?!" and told me to work at a stocking factory, 2/6 per week. All raw silk which gave me a "silk rash". Father was cross so I went to a factory making machine guns 6am-2pm, then 2-10pm altrenate weeks. Better pay 11/- per week and mother allowed me 11dp.p.w! (1d per 1/-) carried on with factory work all the war.
