In 1942-43 at this E.M.S Hospital, we dealt with convoys of injured soldiers of all nations. We carried out some research on the place and use of penicillin in the treatment of wounds. The penicillin, a yellowish fluid, was driven by ambulance and with police escort from Edinburgh to Larbert Orthopaedic E.M.S Hospital. The Penicilin was contained in a small conical flask with a cotton wool stopper. Wounds were photograhed first. Some wounds treated conventionally with antiseptic dressing such as ethanol and some were sprayed with this penicillin fluid. It was quite staggering to witness the difference. Those treated conventionally generally went septic and were painful. Those treated with Penicillin were painless and healed quickly.
