The army came to Burgh straight from Dunkirk - they made a field-kitchen in the Market Place. They only had the clothes they stood up in, and no billets. All empty property was requisitioned in Burgh and more regiments then followed. The army woke Burgh up.
I used to go to the TocH Canteen on Sunday nights - everyone was silent, as they were listening to Vera Lynn's programme.
RAF personnel used to give concerts in the local school.
I was a telephonist with the GPO at Skegness. When there was an air raid, a red board weent into place and all civilian telephones were cut off - the supervisor would ring all essential people to warn them - air raid wardens and those who were listed. When the green light showed that the raid was over - all civilian phones would be re-connected. Some people were very indignant because they had not been
able to use the phone.
There were road-blocks placed all around Burgh and there was a gun placed at Middle Marsh which would cover the surrounding three miles.
When Spilsby and Firsby aerodromes were open they were practising for the Dambusters raid, and the pilots flew so low that they waved to us.
It was very harrowing for the girls who were on telegrams after raids. The RAF would be speaking to relatives - operators worked all night - there were two girls on duty when the men had gone to war. We all had to sit with gas-masks and tin hats on for an hour every week.
I used to cycle 20 miles a day to work if I was on two shifts. One night I was stopped by a policemen who said my lights were too bright - when I told him what I was doing, he advised me to ' bike home like hell!
The local buses had wooden seats - it cost 5d. for a return workers ticket.
