I was 5 years old and we lived in Aston, Birmingham. We would listen to the radio at 4.30 pm each day and then it would always go dead. We would go to the shelter and then the sirens would sound. Birmingham was badly bombed.
Soon we moved to Bristol which was also badly bombed, so the family moved to Plymouth. My Father was in charge of Egbuckland Fort, which is where we were taken to shelter from the bombs.
Americans used to be on all the roads everywhere and we always would go and ask them for some gum!
When Charles Church was bombed, we stood under the railway bridge nearby and watched it burn. We would also watch the Barrage balloons and naval ships coming in from Plymouth Hoe. We saw HMS Eagle sail in with bodies lined up on the flight deck, all covered in flags.
