Occasionally I was required to stand in as cook as I had been a housewife before the war. One day the Princess Royal was due to visit and I had some scones in the oven in preparation. The windows had to stay shut as any breeze meant the temperamental ovens stopped working. The Brigadier, who was very much my senior, came into the kitchen and opened all the windows. I waited till he had left and then shut them, but he found out. Everyone teased me about it and I was known from then on as ‘the girl who shut the windows when the Brigadier opened them’ as it was a bit if a cheeky thing to do! It made me blush, but at least the scones were fine!
