In 1939 I was 16 when the war started. A while later I joined the Auxiliary Fire Service part time as a volunteer telephonist. Then I became full-time in the National Fire Service stationed at 鈥淒鈥 division in Grange Road, Cambridge. Later I was transferred to 12 Area HQ in Stevenage and finally at Anstey Hall in Trumpington, Cambridge. At times I found it scary at night cycling to get on duty. Planes could be heard overhead. One day I was at work and I heard bombs being dropped. They were incendiary bombs which caused fires and damaged homes. It was really hectic in the control room with all the phones going off! I had lots of friends then; we worked hard but did have leisure. These days, every year we meet for a reunion!
