Annie Boyed was 15 years old at the outbreakof World War 2. She had left school the previous year and was learning shorthand and typing at college.. at the end of her course she wirked as a typist in an engineering frim called Howdens.

Annie (called Nan or Nana) left her job after she was offered a part in a pantomine with the George west in the Princess Teatre (now the Citizens Theatre). She was one of the eight Caledonian Dancers.

Nan volunteerd to join the WRENS at the age of 17 and was called up when she was 18 years old.
