I was teaching in Nairn Academy, up in the north of Scotland, during the war. One of my strongest memories centres on the time that the school decided to undertake an experiment — the school holidays were moved so that the children took off July, then came back for August and September; they were then off again for October so that those students could take part in the harvest. However, when they came back to school, having participated in the harvesting, the exams were only a matter of weeks away and the children had to cram in as much as was possible, in a very short time. The results were rather poor so that the rector of the school decided that ‘never again’ would he agree to such an arrangement.
