When I moved to England we lived at Kings Cross. We had our name down with the Council in London until they offered us a house in the LCC estate in Kenningtons, Aveley. It was strange because all there was was a butchers, baker, co-op and a greengrocers. There was no cinema and Grays was too far. The 32’s went to places — we had more buses than we have now. There was no school, the roads weren’t made up although the pavements were ok. A small holding down Sandy Lane used to sell us fruit and veg. I didn’t work, my husband worked at Fords but didn’t like it. My next door neighbour — their little boy when in their back garden and my boy was in our garden. He came in and said I know that boy — it turned out we had lived in the same street and were in the same class!
There were all young families and we had a VE Party — a carnival
