I was just turned twelve years old when the war broke out. The unknown was frightening; as war was announced on the radio fear seeemed to flow through my veins instead of my blood. We were a family of four.
Mum had recently been in hospital and was in bed recovering when within a short time of war being announced the siren sounded. Mother's friend and neighbour rushed to the house and took myself and brother Ron to her Anderson Shelter where we would be safe. Mum remained in her bed and unknown to us until the all clear siren sounded.
We found Mum in her bed wearing her gas mask, very hot and bothered!
