I was a pupil at Slade Road School in Erdington. The casualties from the war were so great they turned half of the school into a hospital which meant we had to attend school mornings or afternoon only had to do half schooling and eventually I think the whole school was turned into a hospital because the education authorities took over the front room of our house which was a very big room and a teacher came once a week to teach approximately 12 —15 children from that vicinity. I personally thought this was fantastic because I just had to walk up the hall from the kitchen after my breakfast into the kitchen not realising education wise this was not the best thing for me but at the time this was better than sliced bread!
