I was married in 1937 and remember War being declared - I had mixed feelings when I heard it on the radio.
I remember queueing for very small amounts of goods - especially food. I used to save my sugar to make cakes which I sent to Holland where my husband had been posted.
I can remember planes going over on their way to bomb the steel works around Liverpool.
There were unmade clay roads on the estate where I lived and there were 7 bombs dropped - luckily on the roads but 1 house was damaged. One man was also killed.A lump of clay fell down our chimney covering everything in soot.
I did take a job with munitions working 3 weeks days and 3 weeks nights before I worked on the shoe department in Lewis's shop.
My husband spoke little of the War except to say he saw an extermination camp and some human remains
