As a child,I remember the siren would go and my mother would put me in my siren suit, which was a suit that was all in one piece with a hood and a zip up the front and give me my gas mask which was pink with a long pink tongue on the front,it had two round glass windows which you looked through. It had a round bit on the bottom with like a filter so that you could breath when you put it on.It fitted quite snuggly over your face and head and looked quite scarrey.I was then directed out the back door of the house, I walked down the garden path to the shelter, which was made of corrugated tin and it was covered over with earth and grass, you went down the steps and through the doors it was cold and dark.My mother would grab a bag with baby things in for my baby sister and some food and drink a couple of old grey blankets. She would put my baby sister in a black rubber bag with a window in it like a large gas mask and run to the shelter. We already had candles and torches and books and toys down there. We then had to stay there till the siren went again ,the all clear siren, we could then come out.I also remember watching the lights in the sky in the nursery school playground they made a noise and then the noise would stop and they would drop to the ground and make a big bany they were the doodle bugs.Iwas very frightened. Then when the war finished we had a big party in the street, there was great excitment. It took a long time for life to get back to normal. We had ration books and on a Friday we used to be able to go to the corner shop and get 2ozs of sweets wrapped up in a cone of newspaper.
