Mu uncle Allen Cooper was awarded the Polish Gilver Cross of Merit 30 years after WW2, here is story. During the 1944 battle of Monte Cassino, the germans had pin-pointed the source of radio signals and wiped them out, Allen then with the 77th Highland Field Artillery was the one that got away, but only just as an intelligence source informed him that 6 crack Panzar para troopers were out trying to locate him as well as blow up a bridge. Commanding 6 men one being an officer they managed to kill 4 of the paratroopers and take 2 prisoners. His managed to maintain radio contact and keep headquarters and the front line in touch his mission accomplished, the news then came through that the Poles had captured the monastry and had raised the flag. Allens work was secretive so the British Goverment never recognised his work, but at least the Poles did of which i thank them, Allen is still alive and has many more interesting story,s to tell.
