Begining 1940, my first memories of the war. I was just 8 years old, with a sister and brother, both older than me. We lived at Catford then and all I knew at that time was that there was a war on and that my dad was away in the army. On this particular day, I was busy brushing my hair when someone came from the little corner shop to say that there was someone on the phone wanting to speak to my mum. This was such an unusual event that I grabbed my mums hand not wanting to miss out on anything so important. It was my dad, he had just landed from Dunkirk - my mum passed the phone down to me and I said "hallo Dad" but he didn't answer. I didn't know why then.
He was Sapper Alfred Henry Dick, 1854553, Royal Engineers,he was 42 years old.He had served in the first world war and had no need to join up but he did. I just wish that I had asked him more about his experiences when I got older bu I didn't. He died in 1963 on his on his 65th birthday. He went into the army A1 but came out C3.
