Entered on behalf of Jennifer Anne Carter (09/07/1939):

I have vague memories of sitting in the Anderson shelter with my mum, listening to the bombing. This must have been on the night the beacon lights were placed on Hayling seafront to resemble Portsmouth, keeping Portsmouth dockyard safe.

Mother and I went to Havant railway station on the bus with my father, who was returning to wherever (nobody knew where they were returning to) after being on leave. His name was Sapper Carter, David Arthur, Number 1 Section 672 Artisan and Works Company, Royal Engineer BEF.

Mum made him sandwiches to eat on the train. All there was to eat at that time was dry bread and mustard powder, which was made into a paste with water. These mustard sandwiches were carefully wrapped with mum saying over and over, "I am sorry David, I am so sorry."

She would have loved to give him something really tasty. Dad was saying, "It鈥檚 ok, I鈥檒l be fine."

I was probably three years old at the time.
