I remember the Blitz
Bristol -Good Friday 1941.I was 12 at the time,
The Siren sounded at 6pm,My Grandmother, Mother, and I went to our Anderson Shelter about 7pm when we heard the Anti-Aircraft guns start firing.
My Father ,was Firewatching together with several neighbours
That Night was horrendous with bombs seeming to explode continuously
The Shelter shook and was filled with dust so that we had difficulty breathing ,barely able to see in the light of a candle
At last at 7am on the Saturday morning the All Clear sounded and I was thankful to hear Father鈥檚 voice asking if we were alright
We asked him if the neighbours were safe and were reassured to find all OK
Though he added 鈥淏ill Wheeler wasn!t very happy with the Jerries. The buggers knocked the end off his best pipe!鈥
When we went back into our home we were faced with a mess of plaster from ceilings ,broken windows and doors
One unexplained incident, a mystery, Why was there a hole through the head of my bed caused by a bomb fragment when the window in my bed room was still intact?
To this day I am still convinced that there remains an unexploded bomb buried in the garden
Father was a lorry driver and turned up to work at the Garage-Warehouse to find it completely burned out..luckily the horses that were stabled there had all been led to safety by the plucky Nightwatchman
Not so lucky with the contents ,which was bags of Flour. After the Fireservice put out the fire they were left with 200 tons of sticky porridge.Luckily the River Avon was just the other side of the road and it was soon on its way to the Bristol Channel no doubt to the delight of the fish!.
