Ihave been bombed twice first at the age of four in Mill Road, Bury St Edmunds in the First World War and the second, I cannot remember the dates, but I was living with my wife Olive in Elmhurst Drive to the East of Ipswich. The main reason for the bombing was that we were in direct line to the docks. Lucky only one person died that evening in Nacton Road. We took shelter in our Anderson Shelter, the bombing caused it to be uprooted. We then moved to Castle Lane and shared a house with another couple who were in similar circumstances. We took in in three young boys evacuees from Ilford. I did not want to go to war But I did not go as far asmy brother who registered as a conscientious objector. During the war I was working as a engineer for Manganese Bronze in Hadleigh Road. When not working in the factory I was a special constable in Norwich Road. Duties included checking the safety of property, the most importantant checking on the blackout of the houses, this work was done in the evening, a four hour shift. I can only one raid on Norwich Road, that was an incendiary bomb on the Norwich Road Railway Bridge.. We had very little time off from work, what time we did have was spent with the wife's relatives in Bury St Edmunds.
