World War 2

How it affected my Grandma

When World War 2 started on 3rd September 1939 my grandma was 14 years old. She lived in a part of Liverpool where only a few bombs dropped.
She was in school but she wasn't evacuated.

Her dad was called up when the war started because he had fought in the 1st World War, at the age of only 14. He was in the RAF Balloon Barrage and sent to Scotland to protect the Royal Navy.

It was a very sad time because her mother died when she was fifteen, and she had to leave school to look after her dad and brothers. Before the war started her Dad built a bomb shelter and they had to go down almost every night when they heard the aeroplanes.

When she was 18 in 1943 she joined the land army, and went to work on a farm in Cumbria as all the young men had gone to fight in the war women had to do their jobs, like working on farms.

My Grandma knew that war was over when she heard the church bells ring because they were not allowed to ring them until the war had finished.

Message 1 - World War 2 how it affected my Grandma

Dear Rhianna Bairstow,
Thank you for letting me read your story. It must have been a sad time for your Grandma? Things were not always easy for people of her age during those days.
However, there were some highlights for young people growing up during the war. If you wish - tap into stories on this site. You'll get some surprises.
Look up 'A Teenager in Rotherham' (part 2) A3346823 This might give you inspiration for more stories.
All good wishes,
Audrey Lewis

Hello Rhianna,
Could I just put you right about the Church Bells.
Churchill asked for them to be rung after El Alamein and a great peel of bells celebrated the victory at Alemein in November 1942.
Up to that time we had never won a battle and after that time we never lost one. That is how the story goes but as a lad I do remember them being rung out for that victory.
They had rung out once before in 1940-41 as it was thought German Paratroops were landing, that was the warning and it certainly caused some panic around our village I can tell you.
Keep writing your memories down.
Regards Frank.
