I was five when I was evacuated to Bleneu Festiniog. I was the middle of three children living over a paint shop. The woman and her brother (Miss and Mr. Lewis), didn't like me one bit. If I answered her back I was put in the cellar. My brother robbed food to feed me. Mr. Lewis would come into the cellar and abuse me/expose himself. We ran away, but only after I went into Miss Lewis' bedroom and broke her things. She was horrible. The police found us and took us to a shelter; they asked where we had come from. I was in hospital for awhile because I got Tuberculosis and was very thin. Boys and Girls who had been ill treated were sent to Switzerland for three months. I went and came back in good health, aged 6 or 7. My father was a Prisoner of War and my mother had to go out to work. There were nine children in all. One was born after the war. Mother lived in Liverpool. This experience as an evacuee has stayed with me to this day. I am 71 now but I can't sleep with the door locked, I feel so insecure. All thanks to Miss and Mr. Lewis.
