When the war was on I was living in London and the bombing was dreadful. All the civilians were issued with hard hats and we were supposed to wear them during the evenings but I never wore mine, I was young and didn鈥檛 like wearing them.
When the sirens sounded we had to go down Hammersmith underground which was the bomb shelter. It wasn鈥檛 like the films where everyone was singing, it was miserable, frightening and claustrophobic and we couldn鈥檛 wait for morning to get back out.
